I openly wept as I watched
Michael Moore's Sicko. Mr. Moore explores that fact that we (the US) are the only western country without universal health care. Over 50 million Americans are without health insurance. Many die each year due to lack of treatment. Those of us who are insured have been made to fear universal health care. We worry that if the government runs our health care it will be horrible and we will not receive the treatments we need. We are also told that countries such as Canada, the UK and France have broken systems where people do not receive treatment and wait days, months, years for the national health care systems to meet their needs. Mr. Moore's film shows this simply isn't true. People from these countries are treated quickly and actually live much longer than most Americans.
Why don't we have universal health care in the US? Four answers:
Health insurances companies looking to make a buck, health insurance
lobbyists,
pharmaceutical companies and a government who has been bought by those groups. They've done a damn good job of making us fearful of universal health care.
My heart aches. It was so painful to watch this film, but this issue is so important. I encourage you to watch this documentary. I challenge you to keep an open mind.
